san marino

San Marino is a tiny independent country land-locked within the borders of Italy. It was situated upon a hilltop to ward off attacking armies and gives a perfect lookout of the nearby lands. Once a fortified city, the central historic district is home to three castle bastions that overlook the land below. Parts of these castles hang over the cliffside, defying gravity. The country is hailed as the oldest republic in the world. And still to this day retains a different vibe despite being directly inside of Italy.

This medieval city was shrouded in fog as we arrived, which at first was quite disappointing because we were unable to take in the views of the towers from one another, but as the day went on, it gave it a mystic feel allowing us to transform ourselves back in time. It felt as if we were alone in a Medieval landscape captured in time. San Marino will hold an extra special place in my memory, as it became the 35th country that I have visited.
